When you have an infant who is starting solid foods, spits up frequently or is teething and thus drooling constantly, you may find yourself ever in need of a clean bib.
Keeping your bibs clean and ready for wear isn't as easy as one might think prior to caring for a baby. Here are some tips for keeping plenty of baby bibs clean and ready to use in your household.
Let food dry. Instead of trying to wipe away baby food from your dirty baby bibs while it is still fresh, let it dry first. Once the baby food has dried on the bib you can often flake off a large portion of it before trying to wash it. Flake off as much food as possible before pre-treating the bib with laundry stain remover.
Presoak. A first step for making sure you keep plenty of clean bibs at hand for your baby is to presoak your bibs before washing them. Crusty food and spit-up often won't come out in the wash even if you use pretreatments. Each evening, place the dirty bibs for the day in a sink full of hot water with a little laundry detergent. If you are ready to do a load of laundry you can then throw them in. If you aren't planning on doing any laundry just yet, just drain them and hang them up in the laundry room area so they don't get mildewed from being wet then throw them in with the next load.
Have food bibs and dress bibs. Keeping separate bibs for use during meals and everyday wear for a drooly baby is a great way to keep plenty of nice bibs at hand without having to worry much about stains. Buy a package of plain bibs for meals and to be worn at home. Then nice bibs that match outfits or have fun colors or sayings on them can be reserved for trips out with your baby. While spit-ups and other mishaps may mess up your "dress" bibs as well, at least they will be less likely to sport stains.
Keep a washcloth close by. When you are feeding your baby always keep a washcloth close by to wipe his face and hands as he is eating. If you don't have a washcloth at hand you'll end up using the bib to wipe up any spills. Bibs take enough abuse as it is so try not to use them for wiping up spills so you can keep some stain free bibs around.
Keeping nice bibs available when you have an infant can be a challenge but these tips will help make it happen.
