Shopping for newborn clothes or preemie baby clothing must be done with great care since there is so much at stake.
A baby’s skin is at its most delicate right after birth, and this is even truer of a premature infant. The main function of apparel for a new arrival or early bird baby is of course to keep them warm.
In order to do this, it has to fit snugly enough to hold in a little one’s heat. So, it’s important that everything is small enough, but there’s more to it than that. The main things a parent needs to focus on are durability and softness.
Newborns and preemies don’t need to bathe that often, so they don’t need to change their clothes often, either.
They also don’t need a huge wardrobe, so whatever onesies and footsies you do buy need to be durable enough to last for at least the first three months.
This isn’t asking a great deal from the clothing. Let’s face it, the new and premature arrivals don’t exactly live a rough and tumble lifestyle. However, the clothes will need to be washed, and even though it will be on gentle cycle, they still have to be up to the task of extended use.
Moreover, preemie and newborn apparel often gets handed down to the next little sibling, so it has to be in good shape.
The clothes must be extremely soft against a tiny infant’s wrinkly, sensitive skin. A newborn babe has felt nothing but the inside of the womb for the several months, so the first clothing to touch its skin must be gentle. You might try looking for super soft fabrics like cashmere or Egyptian cotton. Keep in mind that these clothes are great gifts for baby showers.
