Children's furniture , clothing and toys are some of the easiest items to purchase at discount prices. Since children typically outgrow their things before they wear out or break, there are many opportunities to purchase high-quality used items with very little wear.
Used items are available at consignment shops, garage sales and flea markets and at online auction sites. Used items can also be swapped with other parents.
Consignment stores are the best bet for furniture and other large items that should be visually inspected before purchase. Consignment stores work by allowing people to display their items in the store in return to a percentage of the sales price. A recent trip to a children's consignment store showed cribs, changing tables and dressers in excellent condition from ¼ to ½ their original price. Clothing, however, is usually not as great a bargain at this kind of store since the profit margin is much lower.
Garage sales and flea markets are excellent places to look for toys and books. You can inspect the items to be sure that all parts are included and your child may even be able to test out an item before purchase. Children's clothing is also a great bargain at garage sales and flea markets but can sell quickly. Get to the sale early for the largest selection. From time to time, you may see a crib or changing table at a garage sale. If this is the case be sure to check and make sure it fulfills all safety standards before purchase.
Online auction sites are the best places to bid on those must-have, name-brand items. Children's clothing by manufacturers like Gymboree, Baby Gap and Hanna Anderssen can be purchased at large discounts, either at auction or "buy it now" prices. Online auction sites are also the place to look for trendy accessories and electronic toys at discount prices. Many community colleges offer courses in learning how to participate in online auctions. Bidders who have taken these courses can save even more than casual users.
You can get items for your child at no cost at all by organizing a swap meet with other parents. Specify beforehand what items will be accepted at the swap and what the rules for swapping will be. For larger items, be sure all parties understand whether the item is to be returned when it is not needed any longer. Check with your church or daycare to see if they sponsor swap meets on a regular basis
